Generally, sound is harder to tweak assuming it functions relatively correctly initially. Issues like auto-volume reduction are still unfixed practically. But there are way more functionality problems. In the newer 8.X and 10 versions, it's even a worse quality (but not that of a big decrease like from XP to Vista/7). Even good tweakers like SRS lost a lot of possibilities. If sound could be considered quite of good quality in XP, in Vista and 7 it lost a lot of quality due to the multiple OS layers interfering with the actual sound card functionality. Keep in mind unless the software is encoded DD 5.1 anything you hear through all 5.1 speakers is SIMULATED! IMO the stereo x 2.1 sounds MUCH better than simulated DD 5.1.Overall sound quality and functionality decreased with each major windows version since XP. I would change the speaker controller to DD 5.1 if I were to watch a DD 5.1 encoded DVD movie, or play a DD 5.1 encoded game. My center channel stays quiet until I change the controller effect to DD 5.1. With this setting the contoller sends 2 channel stereo to the front 2 speakers as well as rear 2 speakers plus the sub woofer. For example for every day computer sound my logitch speaker controller is set to "stereo x 2.1".
It takes software that's dolby digital encoded to bring all 5.1 speakers to life. Unless you've set the sound card, or speaker controler to convert normal 2 channel left and right stereo to DD 5.1 you will only hear 2 speakers. 2 channel left and right stereo sound only nets 2 speakers even though you have 5.1. Remember that everyday normal sound is not encoded DD 5.1, i.e. However, I'm using a Creative Pro sound card. I get something very similar with my Logitech 5.1 setup. 7.1: surround spakers OK + left 2nd surround sound comes from right front speaker * Checked other spaker configuration settings: * Rechecked cables from Creative Subwoofer to speakers * Rechecked cables from MB to Creative Subwoofer * Checked volume control, not set to zero
* On Realtek HD Audio Manager: Speaker configuration: 5.1 Speaker Optional spakers: center, subwoofer, rear pair checked full range speakers: front left and right and surround speakers checked speaker fill/swap/bass management disabled. * Plugged in 3 jacks, colors matching (3 in a row - black:rear, orange: center/subwoofer, green:side speakers) I did a search on this forum and Internet, but could not find any solution to this specific problem. I don't get any sound on all of them when test button is clicked, only surround speakers work. I have a problem with correctly setting the Realtek HD Audio with my Creative Inspire 5200 5.1 speaker set.
